Butterfly Blue Scabiosa

Planted in front of fragrant stock, the Scabiosa (S. columbaria) is a reliable winter bloomer. Also called the "Pincushion Flower", this plant is great for the butterflies. See the little yellow sulfur butterfly in the second shot. Not alot of "landing pads" for the butterflies this time of year.

I have one at home planted next to the street at our mailbox. Hot blazing sun in the summer and I never seem to get around to watering it.

Make yourself a note on your calendar to purchase this plant in 4" or one gallon containers later this spring. Plant in well-drained soil and full sun. When you see Scabiosa in the nursery, buy them. The growers do not have an endless supply of this great performer.
